The 2nd Annual Canadian Salsa Championships will be held on Thursday, October 9th, 2008 as part of the Opening Night Gala for the 6th Annual Canada Salsa Congress. The Canadian Salsa Championships will provide an opportunity for salsa dancers to showcase their talent and creativity to Canada and to the rest of the world.

We are proud to announce that this official qualifying competition will send winners in 3 categories to the World Salsa Championships. First place winners in each division will represent Canada at the 2008 World Salsa Championships to be held in Disney World, Florida in December 2008. The World Salsa Championships, produced by Albert Torres and the Salsa Seven, is now in its 4th year and has earned the reputation as being the most prestigious, most respected and most watched salsa competition in the world. The finals of the World Salsa Championships will be broadcast worldwide on ESPN International, ESPN 2 and ESPN Deportes.

Location:

The event is open to the public. You must be 19 years or older to attend.


Time:

Doors open at 9pm. Social dancing to the music of 4 guest DJs, including DJ Henry Knowles from New York, from 9pm-11pm. Competition from 11pm – midnight, plus 4 Congress dance performances.
Social dancing continues from 12 – 2:00am.

Tickets:

Tickets are $20 per person and are available at the door only. Doors open at 9:00pm.

Overview of Competition:

This competition will be a “one – shot” deal meaning that each couple and team will present a 2 minute choreographed routine using their choice of music. The international panel of judges will judge each couple and team and the 1st place winners of each division will represent Canada at the World Salsa Championships in Florida in December.

Divisions:

On 1 Division - dancing on the downbeat, LA style
On 2 Division - dancing on the upbeat, New York/Puerto Rican style
Team Division - minimum 6 dancers, maximum of 12 dancers, may dance on 1 or on 2

Registration:

Couples and teams must register in advance. There will be no last minute registration allowed on the day of the event. To register please contact Jennifer Aucoin at 416-656-7837 or via email at Jennifer@stepsdancestudio.com. We are only accepting 8 couples per division and 8 teams. Spots will be filled on a first come, first served basis. Your spot will only be held once payment is received.

Couples may not enter more than 1 category (ie. 1 couple cannot enter both the on 1 and the on 2 category). A couple competing in the on 1 or on 2 division will be allowed to enter the team division.

Fees:

All couples competing will be required to pay an entry fee of $50 per couple. This fee is non-refundable and non-transferable.

All teams competing will be required to pay an entry fee of $75 per team. This fee is non-refundable and non-transferable. Dance teams must consist of at least 6 dancers, to a maximum of 12 dancers.

Competitors will be on the guest list on Thurs. Oct. 9th and will therefore not have to pay the $20 admission fee for the Opening Night Gala.

Judges:

There will be an international panel of invited judges, including several judges from the panel for the finals of the World Salsa Championships.
