New earlier start time! Due to the large number of entries, we will begin the Amateur Showcase Competition on Thursday October 4th at 3pm instead of 4pm.
FREE admission: The Amateur Showcase Competition on Thurs. Oct. 4th from 3pm-6pm will be FREE for all spectators so tell all of your friends & family to come and cheer you on! Paid admission still in effect for Thursday evening and Friday daytime.
Some showcase divisions now full. Due to time constraints on Thursday and Friday, the following Showcase divisions are now full: Amateur Bachata, Amateur Salsa, Amateur Female Solo, Pro-Am Female Salsa Showcase, Pro-Am Female Salsa Showcase over 40, Pro-Am Female Bachata Showcase, Pro-Am Female Bachata Showcase over 40, Junior Solo Female.
STILL OPEN: ALL heated divisions (am-am and pro-am), all Team Showcase Divisions and all Professional Divisions (heated and showcase). Please register online in advance for all competition divisions. It is cheaper for you and easier for us to organize and plan the competition.
Competitor Check in Times:
Thursday afternoon competitors (Amateur showcases and Amateur solos) MUST check in between 1pm and 2:30pm on Thursday Oct 4th with the competition coordinators in the Imperial Room. If you do not check in by 2:30pm, you do not compete (no refunds).
Thursday evening competitors (Teams, Same Gender, Pro heats, Pro showcases) MUST check in between 1pm and 6pm on Thursday Oct. 4th with the competition coordinators in the Imperial Room. If you do not check in by 6pm, you do not compete (no refunds).
Friday daytime competitors (Pro-Am showcases & heats, Am-Am heats, Junior divisions) MUST check in between 1pm and 6pm on Thursday Oct 4th with the competition coordinators in the Imperial Room. If any competitors are not arriving until late on Thursday, the final check in will be from 8am -9am on Friday morning in The Ballroom (convention floor). If you do not check in by 9am on Friday, you do not compete (no refunds)
Picking up your pass: Everyone must show Photo ID to pick up your weekend pass, no exceptions. You cannot pick up the pass for a friend. Note that the registration office closes at 1am on Thursday and Friday night. If you do not arrive before 1am, you will need to pay the late night entrance fee if you want to attend that night’s party as our security people do not have access to the registration database.
Hotel check-in/front desk: The lobby at the Royal York Hotel is undergoing a major renovation and is closed off. Hotel room check in will take place one floor below street level. To access the Imperial Room on the main floor on Thursday, just walk around the gallery art wall and follow the signs for Library Bar and Imperial Room. All of the events on Friday, Saturday and Sunday take place on the convention level and the mezzanine level and are not affected by the renovation.
No outside alcohol is allowed in any of the ballrooms (ie. alcohol not purchased at the Royal York bar). The congress security will be checking and confiscating any alcohol that is not from the bar. There are very strict liquor laws in Canada and the hotel could lose its liquor license. Please respect the laws.
Salsa Certification Course with Tito Ortos, Monday October 8th, 11am to 6pm. The Salsa Certification Course by Tito Ortos is geared to salsa instructors or to those dancers who are thinking of becoming salsa instructors in the future. The course is also open to those salsa aficionados who would like to delve deeper and learn as much as possible about the art of Salsa.
The course will include both theoretical and practical components and will cover topics such as the history and evolution of Salsa music and dance, musicality and timing, teaching methodology including the Tito Ortos Method and the social benefits of Salsa. A written summary of the topics discussed and a certificate of completion will be given to each course attendee.
The History of Salsa component has been moved to Sunday so that there is more time on Monday for Methodology and the Tito Ortos teaching methods. History of Salsa component will be on Sunday Oct. 7 for 2 hours (TBC) and is optional for those who took the course last year. Discount for everyone who took the course last year. Christine Cho is professional Makeup Artist and on air Beauty Expert on CTV's The Marilyn Denis Show. Christine has worked backstage at fashion week, MMVAs, TIFF, and other red carpet events with celebrities, models, musicians, actors, and dancers; she regularly features makeovers and beauty tips on television in Toronto and across Canada on various shows.
At her congress workshop, attendees will learn how to design and execute extraordinary makeup looks for dance performances - face sculpting, dramatic eye makeup, lashes crystals and appliqués, tools and techniques, etc. Giftbags (valued at over $200) will be provided for the first 30 attendees (first come first served, one per person). Attendees are strongly encouraged to bring their own makeup and brushes for the hands-on portion.
2018 Performer Deadlines
Hotel Early Bird Pricing ends on Friday August 10th at 5pm. The $149 early bird rate applies to a limited number of Fairmont rooms so book early!

Friday August 31st - Performer Early Bird Ends! Save money by purchasing your Performer Pass by August 31st.
On September 1st, the price of all performer passes will increase by $25 and the competitor pass will increase by $20.
All Performers must purchase their performer pass online by September 18th. All performers must register by midnight on September 18th to ensure that their team's performance spot is reserved, their performer name has been verified by Congress registration staff and that they have been entered into our registration database. If a team has several dancers that have not purchased by September 18 we may revoke the team’s performance spot.
After September 18th, any performer who has not already registered can still purchase online, however the price will increase by $5 per day.
Performer Registration will be closed on October 1st. Any performer that has not purchased by October 1st will have to pay for a full attendee pass, no exceptions.
2018 Competitor Deadlines
Friday August 31st - Competitor Early Bird ends for both competitor weekend passes and competition entry fees.
On September 1st, the price of the competitor pass will increase by $20.
On September 1st, the price of all showcase and heated division entry fees will increase.
On October 3rd at midnight, the price of all showcase and heated division entry fees will increase to at-the-door prices.
2018 Music Requirements
Music for performances and competition showcase divisions need to be submitted in advance: Please submit your music for each performance in advance via email. Here’s how:
Deadline to submit music: Monday September 10th
How to submit: Go to www.wetransfer.com and upload the file. It’s FREE! Send to email@example.com and make sure that you include the EXACT team name in the message box (ie Steps Dance Company, Amateur Team) especially if your school/company has multiple teams performing at the event. If it is a couple performing, please include first and last name of each dancer.
File Naming: Detailed naming of your upload file is very important to the efficient organization of the DJ for tech rehearsals, performances and competitions. Please name each file as follows:

Music Format: MP3 with preferred bitrate of 320 (minimum bitrate of 220) or WAV format or Mac AIFF file. Make sure you are submitting good quality files, ie not music downloaded from YouTube.
Any performance music not submitted in advance will only be accepted at tech rehearsal during the congress weekend in USB format (one track only), clearly labeled with name of the performance team/couple.
Any competition showcase music not submitted in advance will only be accepted at competition check in on Thursday October 4 between 1pm and 6pm. USB format (one track only), clearly labeled with name of the competition team or couple and the division.
2018 Performer Registration Info
All performers, competitors and instructors MUST register online in advance. From anywhere on the Congress site, click on "Tickets" or "Register Now". Click on "Performers". Choose Performer Pass.
Our staff will be verifying all of the performer names that are submitted. Only team members that are actually performing at the Canada Salsa & Bachata Congress are eligible for the performer discounts.
There are no refunds on performer passes. If you can no longer perform but are still attending the congress, you can transfer the amount of your performer pass to the purchase of an attendee pass. If you would like to transfer your performer pass to a team member who has not yet purchased their performer pass, you may do so before September 15th. After September 15th there will be a $30 administration change fee.
All performers will receive a clear wristband at the event. The transparent wristband must be worn at all times including when you are on stage. If you remove or lose your wristband, you will need to purchase a new one at full price. NO EXCEPTIONS.
To pick up your performer pass, bring a piece of Photo ID and a printout of your performer registration confirmation with you to the registration booth at the Hotel. You MUST have a piece of photo ID to pick up your performer pass. Each person must pick up their own performer pass – you cannot pick up passes for your teammates.
Tech Rehearsal Info
All performers MUST attend a technical rehearsal at the performance venue (Hotel, Concert Hall) from 5-7pm on the day of their performance.
Tech rehearsal for the Emerging Artists Showcase on Sunday afternoon will be held Sunday morning from 8am-10am in the Concert Hall. Tech rehearsal Sunday morning is not mandatory.
The order of the performances will be determined and posted at the end of each day’s technical rehearsal by the stage manager.
Call Time For Performances
All groups/couples must be present in the stage holding area at 8:15pm in full costume (Confederation Room, 1 floor below ballrooms). If your group is unavailable at the stage call, you will not be allowed to perform. Shows will start each evening at 9:00pm sharp and run approximately until 10:45pm. The stage itself is approximately 28’ x 20’ (length x depth).
For Sunday Afternoon show, all performers must be present in the Concert Hall (there is no holding room) at 2pm in full costume.
